After wrapping up a vibrant few days at the Dominican Republic trade show in Miami, I decided to extend my trip for some well-deserved downtime. Originally, I thought I'd stay in Miami a bit longer, but the hotel rates were sky-high. That's when Fort Lauderdale came to mind. I hadn't spent any real time there, yet many people have told me that I need to visit.

But where to stay?

I remembered a great conversation I had with a sales manager I met at an event, Barry Rubin, who works at the Sheraton Suites Cypress Creek Fort Lauderdale. Our experience was memorable and he spoke so highly of the hotel he represented and extended a genuine invitation to visit when I found myself in town. So I took him up on it. A quick message later, and I had a reservation in place—simple and seamless.

Getting There

From Miami, I took an Uber to the Brightline station, then hopped on the train to Fort Lauderdale. From there, another short Uber took me to the hotel. The trip took about an hour door to door, and it was one of the easiest and most relaxing transfers I've done. The Sheraton is tucked away in a quieter part of town, making it ideal for guests who are driving (and yes, free parking— a big plus, especially coming from Miami).

Check-In and First Impressions

Checking in was easy and I was greeted warmly, with hospitality that never let up during my stay. I was placed in one of their renovated suites, which was spacious and set up, with two large TVs, a separate living room and bedroom, and even a welcome basket of cheeses and chocolates. This hotel used to be an Embassy Suites, and it still has that open atrium layout and relaxed vibe.

This was waiting for me in my room

On-site Experience

I spent a while in the Marriott Club Room, which had snacks and a cozy feel. A few long-term guests were having a friendly chat with a staff member, which gave the room a sense of familiarity you don't always find in hotels. That feeling of real connection was consistent throughout my stay.

Dining at the bar was a bit underwhelming, but the outdoor pool and Jacuzzi made up for it. They're open until 10 p.m. and were the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day. I spent much of my time at the pool, including the day I checked out, before heading to the airport. It was such a relaxing vibe with enough chairs and space for everyone there.

Site Tour and Renovations

During my visit, I had a full site tour with the sales team. The hotel is currently undergoing a few renovations. The bar area is being redesigned into a space that works for both casual hangouts and smaller events. The dining area is being updated for group dining and private gatherings.

Meeting rooms are also being refreshed and offer flexible layouts, and some have natural light, which I always appreciate. As someone who works with a lot of hotel sales managers, I felt that this team would be a breeze to work with. They mentioned that the would be happy to help customize and ready to help with signage, logistics, and all the details that make planners' lives easier.

The hotel has a new chef specializing in Indian cuisine, which will enhance their catering and banquet options. There are also weekly lobby events, like wine tastings and local pop-up events, which adds to the community feel during your stay.

For those of us in the event planning world, having staff who understand the importance of these details can make or break an event experience. If you're considering venue options for your next corporate gathering, consider booking a venue sourcing consultation to help you find the perfect match for your specific needs.

The Local Scene

On the suggestion of my host, I tried the Fort Lauderdale Water Taxi. For $35, you can hop on and off all day along the Intracoastal, checking out waterfront mansions and lively local stops. It's a fun, relaxing way to explore the area and I recommend it for first timers.

Did it Pass the Vibe Check?

Definitely! From the genuine hospitality to the accommodations and space , to the pool, and local tips, my stay felt comfortable and personal. The staff was friendly and made me feel welcomed. While it's not a luxury property, it's clean and comfortable and would work with the right group who’s looking for quality accommodations that are budget-friendly.
